Coach Joe Crain was George Mason's first Athletic Director and first football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, and tennis coach. He was George Mason's head football coach for 17 years and compiled an overall record of 106 wins, 33 losses, and 5 ties. His football teams won five district championships (there was no Virginia state football playoff system during Coach Crain's tenure). During his ten years of coaching George Mason boy's basketball, he took his 1954-55 to the Virginia State Championship game in only the school's second year of existence, the farthest any George Mason boys' basketball team has ever gone. Coach Crain also had two regional championships and five district championships in basketball.
