Kenneth "Powers" Shutts ('57) is the only George Mason 4-time Virginia State champion in track - twice in the 1956 440 yard dash (51.2 seconds) and in 1957, Also in the 1956 Virginia State championship he anchored the winning mile relay team (3:36.0) and in the 1957 Virginia State championship he ran the anchor leg on the winning 880 yard relay team (1:34.4). His 1956 440 yard run, 1956 mile relay, and 1957 880 events all set Virginia State record times! In the 1957 District Championship meet, Powers won the 100-yard (10.7 sec) and the 440-yard dashes, and anchored the 880-yard relay team to victory with a winning time of 1:36.1 - a new District record. Powers also lettered on the George Mason football team and was offered a number of college football scholarships including: Virginia Tech, Univ. of Maryland, Western Maryland, William and Mary, and VMI.
