Ray Peterson ('56) starred in football and track for George Mason and was honored in his senior year as George Mason's Most Outstanding Athlete of 1956. As George Mason's first notable track sprinter, he was the Virginia State Champion in the 100- and 200-yard sprints in his senior year and also won the 60- and 100-yard dashes at the prestigious Indoor East Coast Invitational Star Games in 1956. In football, Ray was the second in a series of consecutive outstanding running backs at George Mason. After graduation, Ray starred at West Virginia Univ., where he was selected All-Southern Conference Football 1st Team Halfback in 1959. In addition, Ray was a star on the track team at West Virginia and was the Southern Conference 100-yard Dash Champion in 1957. The Oakland Raiders drafted Ray in 1960.
