Wendell Byrd ('71) was an outstanding 4-year starter at George Mason in both football and basketball, being named All-District in both sports for three years running. He was also named Most Valuable Player in football his sophomore year and in both sports his junior and senior years. During his senior season, Wendell was named All-Region in both football and basketball and 2nd Team All-Metropolitan in both sports. In one basketball game during his senior season, Wendell had 22 rebounds. Wendell later became the head basketball coach at South Lakes High School and coached NBA All-Star Grant Hill there. In 1990, the AP named Wendell the Virginia AAA Coach of the Year.
